Cologne’s mayor Henriette Reker tests electric drives for boats from DEUTZ subsidiary Torqeedo

ELECTRIP, an event being hosted by DEUTZ in Cologne from 15 to 21 September 2018, is giving customers, investors, the media and politicians the chance to experience the evolution of all-electric and hybrid drives on land and on water. Cologne’s mayor Henriette Reker seized this opportunity again today, following her visit with Beijing’s mayor Jining Chen last Sunday.

Ms Reker was able to see for herself the power and green credentials of the electric drives built by DEUTZ subsidiary Torqeedo. She took a trip on a motorboat equipped with a 100 kW Torqeedo drive system from the Deep Blue product family, travelling up the Rhine from the harbour at Rheinauhafen as far as Hohenzollern Bridge. Henriette Reker was delighted with the sophisticated and groundbreaking technology from DEUTZ AG, which has a particular role to play given the need for zero-emission transport in major urban centres around the world.

“The company has taken on the technological challenges that face us today and is well-placed for the future: This is made demonstrably clear within the framework of this VIP event with the large range of electric and hybrid powertrains for a wide scope of applications. Particularly regarding the emissions of ships, something, that concerns above all the Rhine as Europe’s busiest waterway, the development and installation of electric powertrains seems to me an extremely exciting and very promising approach”, says Henriette Reker.

DEUTZ acquired Torqeedo GmbH – the global market leader and a system solution specialist for integrated electric and hybrid drives for boats – in September 2017 and used its new-found systems expertise to launch the E-DEUTZ electrification strategy.

“We are delighted that the mayor of Cologne came to find out about our innovative drive systems and put them through their paces,” said Dr Frank Hiller, Chairman of the DEUTZ Board of Management who accompanied Henriette Reker on the test drive. “We would be very pleased if our technology and cutting-edge products were to play an active part in helping major cities like Cologne and Beijing to eliminate transport-related emissions.”
